Not too long ago, you might think that fully automated houses featuring refrigerators that order food at the nearest supermarket, on their own, and coffee machines that brew aromatic espresso as soon as their owners enter the room, were a lot of science fiction. Nevertheless, these days, reality can boast of solutions that implement the most daring ideas about the future of mankind.
Modern home control systems can build networks that include more than 300 devices. The systems monitor houses in real time to keep them clean. They can also monitor the health of the house residents and call the police in case of trespassing.
And of course, advanced home control systems can be integrated with the latest karaoke machines! The opportunities provided by that combination will make singing as joyful as possible. From now on, you can remotely turn on/off your karaoke system; connect it to other multimedia devices; enjoy the multi-room effect and set up awesome parties with a click/tap.
What is a smart home?
An average Smart Home is a home automation system that monitors climate, security, energy consumption, and comfort. All household appliances get combined into a single system and are controlled with an application on a smartphone (tablet) or a special remote control.
That smart system allows you to control equipment in your house, be it a TV set or electrical sockets. According to a schedule, the system turns on/off a robot vacuum cleaner; calculates which of the devices consumes the most electricity. It is also able to serve as an effective baby cam.
The first efforts of developing a smart home were made in the United States in the 50-60s. The first successful design was the Electronic Computing Home Operator (ECHO) IV. It was smart enough to turn on and off the light, feed the dog, tell the weather and temperature. Besides, ECHO IV could also build a family budget, suggest a salad recipe for dinner, etc. The device itself looked like a bulky locker and required advanced programming skills from its owners.
In the USSR, there were homegrown smart home projects. In 1987, a project of electronic equipment for the home environment was released. In fact, that system was the closest to the modern idea of a smart home. However, soviet scientists provided only a few experimental SPHINX samples.
Most of the projects were unsuccessful and not widely distributed. Last but not least, due to the lack of relevant data transfer standards. Each of those systems had its own protocol, that was not compatible with the protocols developed by other companies. In other words, when installing the automation system of one manufacturer, consumers faced quilte specific concern: they could not synchronize their household appliances with the smart system.
The breakthrough occurred in 1978 when the Scottish company Pico Electronics developed the first data transfer standard known as X10. It was compatible with home appliances manufactured by various vendors. A single standard gave a boost to new experiments and the development of smart home technology as we know it. Since the late 90s, home automation has become commonplace. In the USA alone, 30% of all households use smart technologies.
These days, dozens of companies worldwide develop their smart home projects. They are true giants such as Amazon, Google, Apple, and Xiaomi. Modern scientists and developers go beyond centralized home management and are obsessed with smart cities and the Internet of things. It seems that reality has become more interesting than science fiction.
