A karaoke bar is a venue where guests sing popular songs over instrumental backing tracks while the lyrics run on a screen. It can be a shared hall with a stage, private rooms for groups (karaoke boxes) or a mix of both; a sound engineer or an app takes care of song requests and the sound.
How Did Karaoke Bars Appear?
The first karaoke bars appeared in Japan in the 1970s. Although it would be more accurate to say – bars with karaoke. Karaoke was essentially a machine against the wall of the establishment, where a guest could drop some coins and sing any song from a relatively small catalog, reading the lyrics from a paper booklet.
The heyday of karaoke bars is associated with the advent of laser discs. The player was connected directly to a TV and audio system. This innovation offered guests a new level in both sound quality and performance comfort. In particular, a sound engineer began working in the hall. His main task was to provide any possible assistance to the performers, select the repertoire, and tune the song individually for the vocalist.
The transition of karaoke to a digital format made it possible to fully use modulation and achieve stunning effects by changing the pitch and tempo of a track. Karaoke bar guests greatly appreciated the ability to adjust the backing track to the characteristics of their voices.

Types of Karaoke Bars: Asian, American and Mixed
Karaoke bars broke out of Japan and quickly spread throughout Asia: from the Philippines to China. Along with this, the so-called “Asian” model of a karaoke club emerged. Instead of a general hall, guests were escorted to a private room, closed off from strangers, where no one disturbed them, and they could sing without feeling shy, exactly as they wanted and knew how.
In contrast to the Asian one, the “American” model was a large hall with a luxurious stage, backup vocalists, smoke machines, and expensive lighting and sound equipment. Stepping onto such a stage, a karaoke club visitor felt like a real pop star.
The mixed type of karaoke club became widespread: a general hall with a professional karaoke system and several VIP rooms for groups of 2 to 30 people. The private rooms served not only for karaoke with friends but also for business meetings, conferences, banquets, and grand celebrations.
What Is a Modern Karaoke Bar Like?
A modern karaoke bar is, first and foremost, a high level of service, professionalism, comfort, and performance quality. Studio backing tracks have replaced simple melodies recorded on a synthesizer. The approach to ordering songs has also changed. Although the role of the sound engineer is perhaps still the most important position in any karaoke club, today a guest can download the EvoClub app on their smartphone or use a guest tablet to independently select and order a song from the catalog.
In terms of the number of establishments, Asia is still without competition – in China alone, there are up to 100,000 clubs and bars, not counting karaoke boxes in large shopping malls. But considering that karaoke entered Western culture relatively recently, everything is still ahead of us. Karaoke clubs already exist in every city and occupy an important place in the entertainment industry. Their number is steadily increasing, and the standard invariably grows every year.
