Scenario for a Bright 90s Style Karaoke Party

  • September 18, 2026

Bought a karaoke system and planning a party for friends, but can’t decide on a theme? Then this article is for you. Today we will tell you how to organize a hot and energetic 90s style party right at home!

Party Costumes

Although the party is meant to be friendly and at home, a dress code is still mandatory. Ask your friends to dig through their closets. Perhaps some of them still have clothes they wore in their youth, and (miraculously!) if they can fit into them, it will be a great addition to the party.

When choosing a costume, remember that a 90s party has only one rule: the brighter, the better. Mix leggings with oversized flannel shirts and high heels in any proportions. Choose the craziest styles to highlight your individuality!

For the girls, a leather jacket, neon “acid” leggings, or short shorts will do perfectly. The look can be completed with colorful costume jewelry and, of course, the complete and unconditional victory of hairspray over hair.

For the boys: a leather biker jacket or a track jacket and jeans. A perfect and accessible option for everyone is a tracksuit (certainly with the Adidas logo) and dress shoes.

Repertoire

It’s a good idea to discuss the repertoire in advance to make sure all the songs are downloaded to the karaoke system. This will help avoid repetitions and allow you to plan the queue of performances in a more balanced way. No one wants four renditions of “Ugonshchitsa” in a row, right?

Contests

What is a karaoke party without contests? There are many of them, but we will focus on three that are the most fun and easiest to prepare.

Battle of Duets

Divide the participants into pairs and pick songs for them at random from a selection of 90s hits. This contest can be your lifesaver if guests are shy about singing. Performing as a duo is not as scary. It’s good to start the evening with this contest so that guests get a taste for it and get to know each other better.

Guest Star

If we’ve already decided to dress up, why not try on the role of a star? Quickly gather whatever is lying around and craft a “star look.” Sunglasses, hats, and makeup can all be used. After changing clothes, the contestants must perform a song by their chosen artist.

The winner, who most successfully transformed into a star, is determined by the guests’ reaction. For more fun, you can write the names of artists on pieces of paper, mix them in a hat, and draw them blind.

Ruki Vverh Battle

Who is the main star of the 90s? Without whose songs did no school disco take place? Ruki Vverh, of course. You can have different attitudes toward their music, but there probably isn’t a person whose mind hasn’t forever absorbed the chorus of “Student” or “18 Mne Uzhe.”

Right in the middle of the party, announce a battle for the best performance of one of the hits by the legendary band. As a prize, the winner gets the right to appoint the next performer and the song they have to sing.

No Food Tables

Don’t even try! Let’s limit ourselves to light appetizers or snacks this time. It’s better to clear the space in front of the TV for performers and dancing. A karaoke party implies that you will be singing, having fun, and spending time actively, not sitting with your mouths full.

Prizes

Prepare gifts for the participants in advance. These can be joke souvenirs related to the party’s theme. For example, old posters of 90s pop stars or balloons with the names of the biggest hits of that time. If you like baking, make prize cupcakes or pastries shaped like microphones.

Alcohol

Strong drinks and karaoke go together like bread and butter. We will not preach to you about how to spend your free time. Just collect everyone’s car keys and make sure they call a taxi.

The Host (MC)

A host is needed not only for karaoke clubs. An MC will make the evening brighter, more fun, breathe fresh air into the holiday, stir up the guests, and keep them from getting bored. This doesn’t mean you have to hire a professional host. Any of your guests with a silver tongue can easily fulfill this role.
