Most of the time, the Dunkin’ Donuts cafe in Boynton Beach, Florida, specializes in making donuts and coffee for its customers. But once a week, the donut shop turns into a lively karaoke club for older Floridians, where they can sing karaoke for free.
This event was organized by 78-year-old Ziggy Galit with a group of seniors, which includes his friends and neighbors. They mostly sing songs from their youth, starting from the 1940s. Classic hits like “We are Family,” “My Way,” “Imagine,” “Sweet Caroline,” “To All The Girls,” and others are heard most often.
“I like making people happy and distracting them from their problems and illnesses,” says Galit. “One day, sitting around with nothing to do, I wondered if I could get people involved in such an exciting activity as karaoke and bring back their good mood.”
Galit discussed the idea with the Dunkin’ manager, explaining that karaoke would make many people happy and make them feel like teenagers again. The cafe’s management liked the proposal. Even more — they met the elderly man halfway and bought a karaoke machine themselves.
“From the very first week we started, more and more people come and sing. Many sing as if they were superstars, getting great pleasure. Visitors bring lists of songs and bring friends and kids, who also have fun,” adds Galit.
The cafe managers think evening karaoke is a great idea. In a way, they are giving back to the community of people that has supported their establishment for many years by buying coffee and donuts.
